On Wednesday morning, Cody woke to find the apartment trashed for a change.

A few of his brother’s coworkers had passed out on the Target couches. He stepped over some empty cases of Coors Light on his way to the kitchen.

There the elder Reisling drank coffee, wearing the button-down shirt of CPA-assistanthood. He threw Cody a copy of the Valley Monitor. “Hey, slapdick,” he said, “look what I can’t go to because I work for a living.”

Cody glanced down. Together with the local congressman, ex-Governor Gray Davis and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would arrive in Emerald Valley at noon.
